Handwritten diary for the year 1881 by T. O. Springfield (Thomas Osborn Springfield) of Anner Castle in Co Tipperary and later Springfield of The Glebe of New Inn, Cahir, Co Tipperary. It contains entries about the death of his wife, meeting Arnold de La Poer, attending, such as, a Ball at the militia Barracks, a meeting of the hunt society, a meeting with The Land Leaguers. An attempt to burn down a Donegal Convent. Which prompts him to say, “The country is in an awful state” There are detailed entries for every day in the diary, filled with local and national events, travel and weather. Signed by Springfield, (Cahir, Tipperary) to the front end page. Heavy damage to front and rear end pages, all handwritten entries clear and easily legible.
