INCUNABULA: The Nuremberg Chronicle by Anton Koberger, 1493.
Very First Edition, in Latin, in Gothic Rotunda type. A German edition appeared later in the same year. It is considered one of the most important German incunables and the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century.
Liber chronicarum. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, 12th July 1493. A Pictorial History of the World, the Nuremberg Chronicle was written over several years by the doctor and book collector, Hartmann Schedel, who was commissioned by two Nuremberg merchants. It was originally published in Latin in an edition of around 1400-1500. The Chronicle also incorporates geographical and historical information on European countries and towns. The narrative is divided into 11 parts - the so-called world ages, and is profusely illustrated by images of biblical and historical events, and topographical views of towns and countries in Europe and the Middle East,
including Jerusalem and Byzantium.
Imperial folio, leaves 422mm × 287mm. Calligraphic woodcut Title Page, (with inscriptions/notes, minor worm holes, not affecting text), Tabula (19 leaves, rubricated letters in blue), Main Body of Text (first leaf with illumination, 300 leaves - I to CCLXVI; then 6 leaves un-numbered but titled; then CCLXVII to CCXCIX plus leaf with other half of double page map of Europe and colophon verso). 2 double-page maps - Europe and the World and c.1,804 woodcut illustrations - all as per Cambridge University Digital Library and other digital resources, although some pages in differing order. The colophon details the book was printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger and the involvement of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleyenwurff, who contributed figures of cities and famous men. The work was completed on July 12, 1493.
Bookplate of The Right Honourable Robert Henry Meade 1879 (Meade GCB, was the second son of the 3rd Earl of Clanwilliam and Lady Elizabeth Herbert. Clanwilliam, an Irish peer, had served as Private Secretary to Lord Castlereagh and subsequently as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.).
Contemporary full leather binding, blind tooled with decorative emblems and the spine with gilt titles and decorative panels amongst the five raised bands - all housed in a cloth slipcase.
