Lowndes, p. 1113; Dibdin, Volume II, p. 108; Blumenthal, Art of the Printed Book, p. 24. *John Pine (1690-1756) was an engraver, and a friend of William Hogarth. This edition of the works of Horace, for which he engraved both the text and illustrations, is considered one of the masterpieces of the 18th century book arts. The Subscribers list included both Jonathan Swift and Charles Ford and George Friedrick Handel. The enclosed copy is accompanied with a letter by Thomas Bodkin Dated December 1927 , the year in which he took up the Directorship of the National Gallery in Dublin to Professor Alton the Professor of Latin at Trinity College Dublin who subsequently went on to become the Provost in 1942. The letter confirms that Bodkin had been left the volumes by Mr Waldron, presumably Laurence Waldron the Dublin Stockbroker and friend of Harry Clarke. “Pines edition should be in worthier hands.”
