Edgar Allan Poe - Tales of Mystery, Imagination, & Humour; and Poems, Published by Henry Vizetelly, London, 1852. First UK and first illustrated edition, early state with “Twentieth Thousand” and retaining the original Henry Vizetelly imprint title page. Contemporary cloth, gilt title to the spine, Pp. xxiv 256, [1]., wood-engraved frontispiece and vignette title-page, similar vignettes throughout the text, published as part of the short-lived ‘Readable Books' series. Subsequent instalments in the series were published first with the imprint of Vizetelly and Clarke, and then Clarke, Beeton & Co. Clean pages, tightly bound, small midlands Library ownership Stamp to the top of the front end page, name to verso of front board, contemporary name and date (1852) to top of title page else clean.

.Seamus Heaney. The Spirit Level. 1996. 1st. Loosely inserted is a typed full page letter, signed, from Seamus Heaney thanking the recipient for his suggestions regarding a title for book (above). However Heaney, states "I have an inclination to call it The Flaggy Shore which is the name of a place in Co. Clare mentioned in one of the poems but also it has a nice double meaning, I think that "Flaggy" can mean either stony or hung with flags. So There y'are" "Seamus Heaney". In fact when this work was published the following year the poet called it "The Spirit Level" and The Flaggy Shore or Postscript was the final poem in the book. With the enclosed letter included, this represents the ultimate association copy. Rare.

At Swim Two Birds Flann O'Brien Published by Longman, Green & Co, London, 1939. True first edition, first printing in original black cloth boards. Very few of copies of the book sold on publication in 1939. Much of the rest of this stock was destroyed when Longman's warehouse was bombed in the Blitz of 1940. Copy in the original black cloth is very rare.

Annála Rioghachta Éireann. The Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland, by the Four Masters from the Earliest Period to the Year 1616. Edited by John O'Donovan. Second edition. Dublin: Hodges, Smith & Co. 1856. 7 volumes 4to. Later red/black calf with gilt titles. Although a number of manuscript copies were circulated, this monumental work remained unprinted for more than two centuries after its compilation by Fr. Michael O’Clery and his associates (1632-36). Eventually in 1846, Owen Connellan issued his translation into English of those Annals which cover the period after the Norman invasion. Connellan’s work was so severely criticised, that the Dublin bookseller George Smith, employed the renowned Irish scholar John O’Donovan to make a fuller and more accurate translation, with copious annotation. This he did with considerable assistance from Eugene O’Curry, the work first appearing in three volumes 1848-51. Its success was immediate, so O’Donovan was encouraged both to turn his attention to the period before the invasion, and to produce the Indexes to Places and People, which are so helpful to the researcher. As a result, copies of his [first] edition are sometimes found bound in five cumbersome volumes with the later period preceding the earlier years, and with seven title pages included in the final volume, to allow subscribers the option of rebinding their sets in correct chronological sequence. In this “second” edition, the text remained unaltered, but for the first time sets were offered for sale in seven more manageable volumes, and in their correct order.
